Many body effects at surfaces and interfaces

چکیده
The past two decades have experienced the development of angle-resolved photoemission to the point that it can now provide crucial information on an energy scale that is relevant to many key problems in condensed matter physics. At the same time, our ability to prepare and characterize surfaces, interfaces, and thin films has improved to the extent that many exotic phases can be produced with a high degree of perfection. The combination of these two developments suggests many interesting experiments can be performed that probe the coupling between charge, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom in the context of surface and interface physics. In this paper we briefly review a few groundbreaking experiments that have initiated this effort. We also speculate on future developments in this area. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Phase transition of the dry friction between crystalline surfaces induced by normal load
A major source of energy dissipation and surface wear is the kinetic friction at the interfaces of sliding bodies. Traditionally, on a macroscopic scale, this undesirable effect is reduced with lubricating the surfaces by introducing oil into their interface. An interesting phenomenon, called superlubricity, has been reported on a nanometer scale where dry (without lubricant oil) fruition and w...
متن کاملAromatic molecules on low-index coinage metal surfaces: Many-body dispersion effects
Understanding the binding mechanism for aromatic molecules on transition-metal surfaces in atomic scale is a major challenge in designing functional interfaces for to (opto)electronic devices. Here, we employ the state-of-the-art many-body dispersion (MBD) approach, coupled with density functional theory methods, to study the interactions of benzene with low-index coinage metal surfaces. The ma...
متن کاملStudy of surfaces and interfaces using quantum chemistry techniques
There are a number of difficulties in elucidating the microscopic details of the electronic states at surfaces and interfaces. The first step should be to determine the structure at the surface or interface, but this is difficult experimentally even for the clean, ordered surface and extremely difficult for cases with impurity atoms (e.g., nonordered oxide layers). The theoretical study of such...
متن کاملABCD matrix for reflection and refraction of laser beam at tilted concave and convex elliptic paraboloid interfaces and studying laser beam reflection from a tilted concave parabola of revolution
Studying Gaussian beam is a method to investigate laser beam propagation and ABCD matrix is a fast and simple method to simulate Gaussian beam propagation in different mediums. Of the ABCD matrices studied so far, reflection and refraction matrices at various surfaces have attracted a lot of researches. However in previous work the incident beam and the principle axis of surface are in parallel...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics simulation of a binary mixture lubricant for use in hard disk interfaces
In Hard Disk Drives (HDD), it is necessary to decrease the Flying Height (FH) between the head and the disk (currently, FH is around 3-5 nm) so as to increase recording densities. Retaining the solid lubricant has become a difficult proposition owing to intermittent contact between the surfaces. ZTMD and Z are used as solid lubricant to lubricate these interfaces. In this paper, the behavior of...
